It is well known that lesions affecting the trigeminal nerve may lead to the development ofneurotrophic keratitis (Magendie, I 824), but the incidence and the extent of the keratitis seen by biomicroscopic examination of the cornea, and in particular its effect upon visual acuity, are not well documented. The present study was undertaken to investigate these aspects of keratitis, in corneae rendered anaesthetic by alcohol injection of the trigeminal sensory root (henceforward referred to as Injection) (Penman and Smith, 1950; Penman, I958).
